It’s often said every day belongs to love if you meet the right person. Patruni Chidananda Sastry, a drag artist from Hyderabad, and his now-wife Raja Rajeshwari Devi have proven the adage true. While Patruni happens to be pansexual, his wife is heterosexual, and it goes without saying they defied all odds to get married.

Incidentally, the couple’s love story is no less than one from Bollywood. Patruni is India’s first-ever drag queen married to a cisgender heterosexual woman. It was during Pride month in 2020 when Patruni noticed an unfamiliar account showing up at his live shows on Instagram. As destiny would have it, some months later, they met each other at a family function.

Patruni was not aware that it was this girl who was showing up at the live shows on Instagram. At the function, Patruni says that one of their relatives put some extra kumkum that was falling into his eyes and the girl immediately gave him a towel. That was the time, Patruni says when he felt the warmth and realized that such a person would follow him through life’s journeys and root for him. It was only later that he got to know that the girl was Rajeshwari.

However, after a few months of dating, he had to tell the truth to Rajeshwari. So, he texted her that he was pan-sexual. And next, he receives photos and information about pan-sexual along with a question, ‘Is this what you meant?’ Much to the surprise of Patruni, Rajeshwari said it did not matter to her if he was a gender-fluid drag artist if he loved and wished to be with her.

Patruni also runs a website Dragvanti to read and share news, interviews, artists, memes, quotes, and knowledge on the Indian approach to drag. The couple eventually got married in August 2020 during the first lockdown. The big hurdle came when he announced his marriage. There were questions raised in his queer community about his sexuality and orientation. But the couple came through the tough times and tied the knot.

The drag queen is only too happy. He shares that his wife accepted him and adds that while they have different interests, they are learning every day. Patruni reveals he and his wife share sarees and make-up. Rajeshwari also attends his shows now and then, says Patruni, who kickstarted the drag scene in the city in 2014.
