Authentic Food From The Himalayas Now in Hyderabad

Hyderabad has always been a food lovers’ paradise, given its cosmopolitan culture. However, what’s changed in recent times is that more and more migrants to the city are opening specialty restaurants in the city. And one such restaurant that is quite popular with the locals is Aama’s, an authentic Nepalese restaurant.


The family-run restaurant is situated right behind the University of Hyderabad and began as a small stall. It was in the year 2015 when Priyanka Rai and her sister Darshana Rai quit their cushy corporate jobs to start making momos at home. Once word got around and the place was well established, their husbands Dipesh Ghimiray and Sameer Gupta joined them, and they set up a permanent stall behind the University of Hyderabad.


Years later, they converted their stall into a small cottage-like restaurant where they serve authentic food from Nepal, Tibet, and Bhutan. Coming from Kalimpong in West Bengal, the owners of Aama’s picked up influences from all three countries bordering the state.


While momos continue to be their specialty, they have now added eight varieties to their menu over the years. Similarly, thupka, a Nepalese noodle soup, is quite popular among their guests. Another must-try at their restaurant happens to be Datshi rice, a Bhutanese dish made of potato and cheese.


And it’s not just the food but the ambiance that transports one to the foothills of the Himalayas. The little, quaint place has Tibetan prayer flags fluttering from the ceiling that make it a charming place. At Aama’s, one can try Shabhaley, Thenthuk, Shyapta, Saade ko aloo, and meat curries served in Tibetan style.
