Well, the situation and certain developments point out the possibility of a tiny house movement in India and in Hyderabad. From addressing environmental concerns, financial concerns, and a desire for freedom all push potential owners to opt for a ‘tiny’ home.

Also, more and more millennials are going in for co-living spaces over individual houses, apartments over villas, and rented places over-owned houses. Also, tiny houses make financial sense. And it is surely something that the country is adopting from the West, where it has become a norm of sorts for middle-income groups to plan for such houses. They prefer financial and ecologically sustainable ways of living by choosing smaller, compact, and even mobile houses with limited resources.

However, while some are being bitten by the ‘tiny’ bug, India is yet to witness huge demand in a proper sense. So, those who believe in the concept are opting for co-living spaces and rented spaces over-owned houses. But some architects in the city feel the tiny house movement might be feasible in the West, though it may not be a viable option in India.

Ever-increasing population, ever reducing space in cities, high realty prices coupled with migration and inflation are all pushing people to live in smaller spaces. It has been seen that between 2014 and 2018, the average apartment size in seven major cities reduced by 17 percent. In Hyderabad, 1750 sq ft is the average size of an apartment.

But living in tiny houses is not as rosy as it looks, even in the West, as it entails getting permissions, leasing land, building recreational trailer parks for mobile homes, places to dump their waste, and charging their appliances. Though Indian architects feel there are other ways of being eco-friendly by taking public transport, wearing eco-friendly clothes, renting furniture instead of buying new ones and using organically grown veggies, etc.

A few builders are coming up with container houses in farmhouses that can be as tiny as 450 sq ft or multi-floor houses of 900 sq ft for the convenience of the dwellers.
