Sports enthusiasts have some good news as GHMC (the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation) sets up a series of modern facilities in different parts of Hyderabad. A sports complex at Katedan, a swimming pool at Owaisi PlayGround in Golconda, a football stadium at Barkas, and a swimming pool at Sachivalaya Nagar in Vanasthalipuram are the four facilities where construction is underway at a brisk pace presently.
A total of 18 projects, including swimming pools, indoor stadiums, etc., have been taken up with an approximate cost of Rs 86.61 crore by GHMC to encourage sports. Four are in progress, while the Gajularamaram one is ready for inauguration.
The infrastructure in Hyderabad is taken up to encourage budding sports talent and provide them with a platform by the Telangana government, and these facilities are on par with the services by private ones.
The sports complex at Katedan has a pool equipped with change rooms and several other facilities for swimmers. According to the officials, high quality was ensured in brickwork masonry, flooring, plastering, etc.
The new infrastructure now adds to the existing 12 sports complexes, seven swimming pools, 521 playgrounds in the GHMC limits. The reports also suggest that the sports facilities are also generating revenue. From April 2021 to December 2021, over Rs. 90 L revenue was generated by leasing out these facilities.
It is also being reported that GHMC charges a nominal fee to ensure the sports facilities are utilized by people from all strata of society, especially the destitute. Despite the lower fee structure, great revenue is being generated.
