MoWo Social Initiatives founded by the Hyderabad-based Bikerni Jai Bharati plans to empower one million MoWo-ians not just in India but also in other countries in Africa and Asia. In February 2019, this social Initiative was founded which offered two and three-wheeler training to women so that they can move around on their own and also convert it into a career.
Visa’s grant of Rs 7 lakh will be used to develop robust communication channels, enhance outreach and encourage more women to pick up mobility as a skill, for the ambitious target set by Jai Bharati.
In 2013, Jai Bharati was a part of the founding group of the city chapter of The Bikerni Club in Hyderabad. According to Bharati, during her 17,000 kms cross-country motorcycle expedition from Hyderabad to Vietnam in 2018, she saw women riding a two/ three-wheeler for a fare and realized the employment opportunities for them. She started MoWo Social initiatives in February 2019 to offer two and three-wheeler training to women. She claims that they are a non-profit organization that seeks to create a reliable and safe commute option for and by women.
Women enrolled with MoWo are guided through the whole process right from getting a learner’s license, handling a two-wheeler, riding to encouraging them to get a permanent license, and are also assisted with related livelihood opportunities. Since 2019, both in rural and urban areas, over 1,000 women have been trained.
MoWo organization plans to fulfill its decade-long vision of empowering 10 Lakh women, with the grant from Visa. Bharati excitedly says that the grant will also enable them to spruce up their training capabilities besides helping them find more employment opportunities for women by piloting the fleet services.
Three winners in small women-owned businesses across sectors are selected by the Visa grant program in India and MoWo is one of them. The program was an extension of two successful editions in the US last year.
