Well, one has heard of many start-ups taking off during the pandemic and like many who put their creative brains to work, a couple of start-ups from Hyderabad have launched successfully and most importantly making money out of it. And the product that is common to all of them is a pro-biotic drink Kombucha. The drink has its origin in China and simply put, it is fermented brewed tea. It could be black/ green or even oolong tea depending on how strong one prefers their drink. The fermentation happens when one adds SCOBY or symbiotic culture of bacteria and yeast to a sugary drink. However, one need not worry as the bacteria and yeast eat up all the sugar over weeks and a refreshing, slightly sour fizzy drink is left.
Ironically, kombucha is quite popular with youngsters in India, who already know about the product thanks to their international jaunts and social media. One of the entrepreneurs, Rahul K learned to brew kombucha during his time at Manipal University and was making batches of the drink for friends. Once he was back in Hyderabad, he shared his idea with his friend Twinkle and they started a brand called Hydra Kombucha.
They offer flavors such as Mango jalapeno, pomegranate basil, masala chai, pineapple apart from the original kombucha.
Just like Rahul and Twinkle, friends Shruti Padala and Divya Vegesna were totally in love with the fermented drink during their trip to Gokarna in 2017. On returning to Hyderabad, they could not find anyone selling the drink and decided to start the venture themselves. Thus emerged Booch Please. They have six flavors on offers such as Bloody Beet, Zesty ginger, Goofy grape, Mexican mama, Apple pie, and Purple rain.
